The Ayurveda Solution to PCOD Problems, Especially Infertility
Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is an increasingly common chronic medical condition among women of reproductive age. It is characterised by the production of high amounts of male hormones and the presence of multiple cysts on the ovaries. These cysts manifest from the large number of immature or partially mature eggs produced by the ovaries and can end up playing havoc with the hormone levels in the body.
This is an extremely complex syndrome with varying symptoms like excessive weight gain, irregular menstrual cycle, infertility, hair loss, unwanted hair growth, acne and other skin problems. It can even cause mood swings, irritability and depression. While not everyone experiences all the symptoms, left unchecked, PCOD or PCOS (as it is also called) can lead to long-term health issues like diabetes and heart disease.
Unfortunately, there is no known cure as yet. Conventional treatments can at best manage the symptoms with lifestyle changes like losing weight, eating healthy foods and exercising regularly. Medication varies depending on the symptoms – like contraceptive pills for menstrual problems, insulin medicines for controlling obesity and fertility treatments for helping with conception. Needless to say, the side effects are aplenty!
Treatment of PCOD in Ayurveda
Ayurveda believes that PCOD is caused due to an imbalance in the pitta (fire) or kapha (water) doshas. An aggravated pitta can contaminate the blood, plasma or other tissues in the body leading to build up of toxins. When these toxins accumulate in the brain channels, it causes an imbalance in the hormones which in turns leads to the formation of cysts. The latter are nothing but a collection of fluids in the ovary!
Ayurvedic treatment for PCOS involves a systematic approach for long-term management of the disease. At Swaantana, we chalk out a customised treatment plan for each woman which is specific to their symptoms. This can take two primary forms – PCOD PCOS ayurvedic treatment with obesity or without obesity. While Udwarthanam (deep tissue massage to melt the fats in the body), Dhanymoolasweda (herbal oil massage for hormone regulation), Virechana (eliminating contaminants in the pitta dosha) and Vasthi (herbal oil enema) therapies are used to treat PCOD with obesity; Abhyangam (warm medicated oil massage), Pizhichil (squeezing warm medicated oil on the body), Virechana and Vasthi work well when the patient is not excessively overweight. These work to detoxify the body, correct insulin resistance, reverse hormonal imbalance and revitalise the reproductive organs, apart from addressing obesity.
The therapies are complemented by ayurvedic herbal medicines, diet modifications and lifestyle recommendations as a holistic approach for treating insulin resistance, controlling high cholesterol levels, reducing obesity, correcting hormonal imbalance and boosting fertility, as needed.
