Diaphragmatic breathing involves the full expansion of the diaphragm, In order to do this, it is recommended that you lie on your back with your knees folded. Place one hand on your chest and one below your rib cage near the belly. Proceed to breathe deeply through your nose and feel your belly rise under your hand. Inhale as far as you can, then proceed to breathe out through your lips and feel your belly return to the original position. This extensive and forceful breathing will help expand the capacity of your lungs and this will assist in breathing easier for asthmatic individuals.

2. Kapalbhati Pranayam: The Eastern version of Diaphragmatic breathing, Kapalbhati brings about similar effects. It is to be performed while sitting with a straight spine. Kapalbahti begins from a position of the stomach and abdomen being contracted, with no air in the system. It is the forceful exhalation of air from the nose. As the abdomen and stomach are relaxed, the air flows into the system with ease. When 20 such deep breaths are taken, one round of Kapalbhati is completed. 3. Ujjayi Pranayama: This is a basic method in breathing patterns that is useful in directing the udana, which is the bodily flow of upward energy. To perform Ujjayi Pranayam, one must simply sit in a comfortable posture and focus on their breathing. Taking a deep breath in, feel the air travel to your entire body. When you are about to breathe out, tighten your throat and allow yourself to let out an ‘ahh’ sound. This brings about awareness of the breath itself and makes the flow of breath subtler and smoother. The name translates to “Victorious Breath” as the practice makes one feel uplifted.

4. Nadi Shodhana Pranayama: An alternative breathing through the nostrils, Nadi implies the subtle energy channel that breath carries, while Shodhana implies purification. To perform this Pranayama in a traditional fashion, the index and middle fingers of the right hand are placed in the centre of the forehead while the ring finger and thumb rest on either side of the nose. The right nostril is held down by the thumb while the left nostril takes air in and then it is held down by the ring finger. This air is expelled out of the left nostril and then inhalation is done through the right nostril. This process is repeated with the next nostril. The main purpose of this is to purify the cells of the body. It also makes sure that the adequate amount of oxygen reaches the parts where it is needed.

5. Setu Bandhasana: The Setu Bandhasana is commonly referred to as the Bridge Pose. You begin by lying on your back and bending your knees as you place them below your waist at a slight distance. This is followed by pushing your torso, middle and waist till your weight is supported by your shoulders. The chin should be in contact with the chest while you breathe normally, holding this position for about a minute or two. This asana helps to expand your chest and is essential for making breathing easier.
